Chantal Weynandt – "I live my passion for social work"

15

In February 2017, I started working at the Family Antenna in the family strengthening service (“Familjenstärkungsdengscht”) of SOS Kannerduerf. Very soon after, I joined the supported housing service, SLEMO. It didn’t take me long to realise that I had truly found my place within SOS Kannerduerf.
In November 2021, I took on the role of Group Leader while also starting a degree in social work, which I successfully completed at the end of 2024. My final thesis, entitled “Trauma-Informed Pedagogical Approaches: Diagnosis and Intervention with Young People Facing Psychosocial Challenges in a Youth Support Service in Luxembourg”, explored the impact of these approaches on the well-being of young people.

Training to improve practice
In this context, testimonies from SLEMO residents clearly showed how much their well-being had improved thanks to a trauma-sensitive pedagogical approach, valuing each person, and providing a safe environment. These findings are crucial for daily practice and confirm the commitment to offering high-quality support.

Committed to improving young people’s lives
At SOS Kannerduerf, I feel a deep sense of fulfilment in my work. The organisation’s values – compassion, empathy, and a human-centred approach – resonate fully with my own beliefs. It is inspiring to be part of a team committed to improving the lives of young people and to offering them a setting that fosters growth and recovery. My daily involvement with the residents and the exchanges within my team are a constant source of joy and motivation.

Sustained professional development
Beyond my bachelor’s degree, since joining the foundation I have experienced significant personal and professional growth. The many opportunities for continuous training that the foundation has offered me have greatly contributed to my professional development and broadened my skills. As a Group Leader, I have strengthened my leadership abilities while learning to value the importance of teamwork and clear communication. Discussions with my colleagues and the sharing of experiences have brought me new perspectives and improved my ability to respond to the individual needs of young people.

Fostering positive experiences
On a daily basis, I constantly strive to create positive experiences and meaningful shared moments in the lives of our residents. I also aim to continuously support and accompany the personal development of young people at SOS Kannerduerf. For me, this means communicating empathetically, engaging with young people on an equal level, and understanding their needs. It also requires patience and the ability to build trust through active listening and joint problem-solving. As a leader, I also believe that constant commitment to professional development is essential.

Giving the best of myself
For me, SOS Kannerduerf is much more than just a workplace. It is an environment where I can fully live out my passion for social work. The life stories of the young people, their challenges, and their successes touch me deeply and motivate me to give my best every single day. The shared experiences and meaningful exchanges with colleagues who share the same values create a genuine sense of belonging that I truly value.
