Interview Valérie OBERLÉ, the General Director
On the occasion of Universal Children’s Day, the young people of SOS Kannerduerf Lëtzebuerg had the chance to interview Valérie OBERLÉ, the General Director. Together, they discussed her commitment, motivation, and vision for the Children’s Village. Through their questions, the young interviewers aimed to understand her role, her goals for the village, and her perspective on children’s rights and well-being. This heartfelt conversation reflects respect, sincerity, and hope for the future.
What do children’s rights mean to you? Which right is the most important one for you?
Valérie OBERLÉ: "Well, for me, children’s rights are a promise. It’s a mindset that we should all share. That children are safe, that they can speak up, that they can take part......be involved in decisions and that they are, above all, respected. The most important right for me is protection, because I believe that without safety, nothing works. OK. Thank you!"

What was your motivation back then, and what is it still today, to take on such an important role as General Director here in the children’s village?
Valérie OBERLÉ: "The Children’s Village was a major goal for me, something I truly wanted to achieve, because I believe that working with children, young people, and their families is very important. I really want, together with all of you and with my teams, to help build a place......a place where children feel safe and where they can grow. This is a great responsibility for me, but it also brings a lot of joy to my everyday life."

What are your goals, what do you want to achieve for the Children’s Village?

Where do you recharge your energy to face these major challenges?
Valérie OBERLÉ: "I’d say I manage to recharge within my family, with my children and friends. And here at the Children’s Village, it’s when I see you, when I can talk with you — especially when I see smiles and happiness. It’s your energy too that gets passed on. I also recharge in nature, and of course with my family and children. But I’d say it’s also with you: when I can talk with you, when I see you. Those moments when we feel a bit closer are the ones that give me a lot back from all the work we do here together with our team." Listen here:
What was your favourite moment or project at the Children’s Village?
Valérie OBERLÉ: "There have been so many special moments at the Children’s Village. I don’t really have one favourite – I have several. It’s the moments when we can all be together, because that’s also what my colleagues, who aren’t with you every day, say as well. They say that when we share something together, we remember why we do what we do. But often, it’s the celebrations we have together – Diversity Day, the Christmas party, a small celebration, the Summer Fest – and everything your mentors and colleagues send me from you: the songs, the texts, the photos. I’ve had so many wonderful moments here at the Children’s Village, and most of those I can name are the ones where you are there. During different celebrations, but also at more serious moments, like the School Merit Awards or KaJuPa, for example. But, secretly, I think we all love the Summer Fest just a little bit more!" Are you happy to see us here and to see how much the Children’s Village has grown thanks to your help?
Valérie OBERLÉ: "I’m really very happy to see you today – and not just today. But today, gathered here around me, it’s truly an honour, because I’m proud of you. I’m proud of the development of the Children’s Village, because you are the heart of it. It’s always teamwork – nothing can be done alone." Listen here :
What are your goals for us?
Valérie OBERLÉ: "The maximum autonomy, the maximum development, the maximum respect, participation, promotion of your rights and protection. Spontaneously, right?" Listen here :
If you had one wish, what would it be?
Valérie OBERLÉ: "If I had a magic wand, I would wish that every child and young person is respected, loved, and heard in their participation. I’d love to give you all wings and a lot of strength so that you can fly towards your own future." Listen here :
